Buckeye excellence is not exclusive to the football field or the basketball court. Around the Oval is our way of keeping you informed of the amazing things happening with the other 34 varsity sports on campus.

Ohio State's Track and Field Teams Open their Seasons in Lexington

The Buckeyes had their first competition of the new year this weekend. Both the men's and women's teams entered the weekend ranked in the top 25 for the first time in school history.

The men's team ended with four gold medals and six total top-three finishes. Pole vaulter Cole Gorski broke Ohio State's school record in the event, setting the new standard at 5.52 meters.

The women's team was able to finish in first three times add and three more top-three places. Annie Ubbings, Aziza Ayoub, and Mary Figler all ended in the top five for the 800-meter dash.

The Track and Field teams will compete in Ann Arbor next weekend.

Men's Volleyball Falls in California

In a match that featured 16 lead changes, No. 7 could not quite hang on against No. 11 Stanford, losing in four sets (25-22, 24-26, 25-20, 25-21). It was the Buckeyes' second loss in as many matches.

Ohio State managed a better offense than the Cardinals, winning the kills category by a margin of seven. Jake Hanes led the Bucks on that side, ending with 24 kills and hitting at a .452 clip. The scarlet and gray's fatal flaw proved to be their serving; 26 service errors proved to be much too costly in the end.

The men's volleyball team will be back in St. John's next weekend as they play host to George Mason.

Women's Basketball Upsets Big Ten Leading Hoosiers

Last week, the women's basketball team played some of their best basketball of the season in two close losses. On Thursday, they finally put it all together.

Ohio State upset No. 25 Indiana 55-50, knocking the Hoosiers from atop of the Big Ten. The Buckeyes relied on stifling defense to win a tough game in Columbus, forcing 19 Indiana turnovers and blocking five shots.

Graduate transfer Carmen Grande led the way on both ends, finishing with a team-high 19 points and five steals. Forward Dorka Juhasz added 10 boards and was an outstanding +11 while on the court.

The Buckeyes are back in action tonight as they host No. 23 Michigan State.
