Ohio State's most proven defender won't be on the field for any practices this spring.
Haskell Garrett, who's expected to lead Ohio State's defensive line this season after earning second-team All-American honors in 2020, is unavailable to participate in practices this spring, an Ohio State spokesperson confirmed Friday.
While Ohio State does not disclose the specific nature of injuries, Garrett posted pictures on social media on Friday that showed he had one leg elevated on a scooter, evidence of an apparent leg or foot injury.
Lettermen Row's Austin Ward first reported that Garrett was unavailable for the spring.
Fortunately for Garrett, he might be the one player on Ohio State's defense who can afford not to be on the field at all this spring. After leading all Ohio State defensive tackle with 311 snaps played last season, Larry Johnson likely would have lightened his workload this spring anyway in order to keep him fresh for his fifth-year senior season as a Buckeye this fall, when he's expected to be one of the top defensive tackles in the country. As long as Garrett is available for the start of the season, his place in the lineup as Ohio State's top 3-technique won't be in any jeopardy.
With Garrett sidelined this spring, there will be more reps to go around for the rest of Ohio State's defensive tackles including Taron Vincent, Antwuan Jackson, Jerron Cage, Jaden McKenzie, Ty Hamilton and early enrollee Tyleik Williams.
