Mathews previously wore No. 7 at Cincinnati’s Winton Woods High School, but wore No. 24 for his first two years at Ohio State because No. 7 was occupied by fellow cornerback Jordan Hancock. Now that Hancock is on his way to the NFL, Mathews has the opportunity to don a number made famous at Ohio State by the likes of Chris Gamble, Ted Ginn Jr., Joey Galloway and Dwayne Haskins.

Mathews is projected to start at cornerback for the Buckeyes in 2025 alongside Davison Igbinosun. Other candidates for playing time at cornerback this fall include second-years Aaron Scott Jr. and Bryce West and five-star freshman Devin Sanchez, with Lorenzo Styles Jr. being a leading candidate to man the nickel cornerback position.
