You cannot stop Tanner Laczynski. You can only hope to contain him. And lately even containment seems to be a tall order. The sophomore forward racked up another five points at Penn State. He is Big Ten Hockey’s Second Star of the Week.

The Shorewood, Illinois native assisted on each of Mason Jobst’s goals in Friday’s loss. On Saturday he extended his point streak to eight games with a goal and two assists. Laczynksi netted the first of five Buckeye scores. His helpers came on Freddy Gerard’s eventual game winner and a victory sealing empty netter.

The series was another chapter in an outstanding season for Laczynski. With 11 goals and 23 assists, he is the Bucks’ leading scorer and the NCAA’s top set up man. His 34 points rank second in the nation, just one point back of Northeastern’s Adam Gaudette. If you want to see this guy play for the Scarlet and Gray you should get out to a game soon. He's too good to stay all four years.

This is the fourth career B1G Star for Laczynski and his third of the season. Michigan’s Brendan Warren is the conference’s First Star after scoring thrice in the Wolverines’ sweep of No. 9 Minnesota. Michigan State’s Mitch Lewandowski also had a trio of goals in the Spartans’ split with No. 18 Wisconsin. He is the Big Ten’s Third Star. Vive la CCHA.

This is a bye week for Laczynski and the Buckeyes. The team is back in action next week when No. 20 Michigan comes to town. (But if you can’t wait for a big time match up, check out the No. 7 OSU women hosting No. 6 Minnesota this week.)

  • Ohio State (15-5-4, 8-5-1-0 B1G) is No. 6 in both polls this week.
  • The Buckeyes are No. 5 in the PairWise rankings, which mimic the selection process for the NCAA tournament.
  • Mason Jobst, Tanner Laczynksi, and Matt Weis are among 74 players (very) long listed for this year’s Hobey Baker award. The fan voting portion of the process, which is supposed to count for a whopping one percent of the final vote, is now open. You can show your support here.
