McCarthy is projected as an early-round draft pick after going 27-1 as Michigan’s starting quarterback over the last two seasons, leading the Wolverines to a 15-0 season and a national championship this past season. McCarthy threw for 2,991 yards and 22 touchdowns with only four interceptions in 2023 after throwing for 2,719 yards and 22 touchdowns with five interceptions in 2022. He went 2-0 against Ohio State as Michigan’s starter.
It’s uncertain who will succeed McCarthy as Michigan’s starting quarterback in 2024. The only returning quarterbacks who threw any passes in games in 2023 were Jayden Denegal and Davis Warren, who attempted just five passes each this past season. The Wolverines added one of the top quarterbacks in the 2024 recruiting class, top-100 prospect Jadyn Davis, but could look to the transfer portal to find a quarterback for the 2024 season.
Michigan is expected to lose the majority of its starters from this past season. Other Wolverines who have either declared for the NFL draft or are expected to include running back Blake Corum, wide receivers Cornelius Johnson and Roman Wilson, tight end AJ Barner, all five of their starting offensive linemen, defensive linemen Jaylen Harrell, Kris Jenkins and Braiden McGregor, linebackers Junior Colson and Michael Barrett and cornerbacks Mike Sainristil and Josh Wallace.
