Taking the court with just seven healthy teammates, sophomore Ameryst Alston led Ohio State with a career-high 29 points in a 70-61 road win at West Virginia Friday night.
The win, coming in new head coach Kevin McGuff's first game is an upset of sorts. The Buckeyes are nowhere to be found in the preseason AP Poll, while the Mountaineers checked in 26th – or the first team in the "others receiving votes" group.
"I told Am before the game, `don't pass up an open shot'," McGuff said. "With the people we had out, I knew she was going to have to have a big night. She's really dangerous off the dribble and she did a great job being aggressive. She played under control and really didn't take any bad shots either. She's a fun player to coach and tonight you could see why."
McGuff already has a solid start on next season, with a commitment from point guard Kelsey Mitchell, ESPN's third-ranked player in the class of 2014, but why wait to be good?
