The University of Alabama at Birmingham made the controversial decision to cut its college football program effective at the end of the academic year. Such an event is decidedly rare in major college football. The last time such an event happened was when Pacific University (which boasts Pete Carroll among the ranks of its alumni) dropped its football program in 1995. Long Beach State dropped its football program in 1991, which is how Terrell Davis found his way to the University of Georgia.
As you can imagine, this decision by UAB's President was not without controversy and upheaval. ESPN's College Gameday ran a segment on it this morning.
Those that want to understand the controversy should read this about the overall relationship among universities within the University of Alabama system.
