Ohio State's inclusion into the four-team playoff left Baylor out. So, the Bears were selected by the Cotton Bowl and paired with two-loss Michigan State. That Michigan State was not picked by the Orange Bowl is a minor surprise of the day.

The Orange Bowl shook a few heads, especially those in East Lansing, by taking Mississippi State over Michigan State. The Bulldogs will face off against ACC runner-up Georgia Tech, which was an easy (and contractually obligated) choice for the Orange Bowl.

The Peach Bowl, which is now in the "group of six" that can rotate playoff games, is one of the most underrated bowl games in the country. It used to amount to a New Year's Eve party for college football. The Peach Bowl this year will pit Texas Christian against Ole Miss.

Finally, someone had to take Boise State this year as the lowest-ranked non-Power Five team in the rankings. Boise State and Arizona will play in the Fiesta Bowl.
