Michigan’s 16-game winning streak has finally come to an end.

For the first time since 2022, Michigan found itself on the losing end of the scoreboard as quarterback Quinn Ewers and the No. 3 Texas Longhorns gashed the No. 10 Wolverines 31-12 at Michigan Stadium on Saturday. The loss marked Michigan’s first defeat at the Big House since 2020.

Ewers — a former Buckeye — gashed Michigan’s vaunted secondary for 246 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Longhorns to the blowout win. In addition to Ewers’ dominance through the air, the Texas defense shut down Michigan’s ailing offense — holding the Wolverines to just 284 total yards and a 3-of-12 mark on third downs while quarterback Davis Warren was held to 204 passing yards while tossing two interceptions to one touchdown.

The Longhorns drew first blood late in the first quarter on a 23-yard touchdown strike from Ewers to senior tight end Gunnar Helm. Michigan quickly responded with a field goal on the very next drive, but the well ran dry for the Wolverine offense from there.

Aided by a pair of takeaways, the Longhorns closed the half with 17 unanswered points — including a five-yard touchdown reception from junior wideout Matthew Golden with 10 seconds remaining in the half — to head into the locker room with a 24-3 advantage over the defending national champions.

After a 52-yard field goal from kicker Dominic Zvada cut the deficit to 18, Ewers led the Longhorn offense 75 yards in under three minutes to push the lead to 31-6 late in the third quarter.

The Wolverines finally found the end zone with 1:52 remaining in regulation on a 31-yard touchdown strike from Warren to wideout Semaj Morgan, but it came too late for Michigan as Texas ran out the clock on its next possession to emerge victorious 31-12 at the Big House.

Michigan will look to get back on track against Arkansas State next week — with another massive game looming against No. 13 USC on Sept. 21 — while Texas will get another early-season tune-up against UTSA.
