Could Bill Belichick be coming to college football?

247Sports reported Thursday that North Carolina interviewed the former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick for its vacant head coach opening this week.

Belichick coached the Patriots for 24 seasons in the NFL and won six Super Bowls. He's been out of coaching for a year, but has been connected to open NFL coaching jobs, such as the Chicago Bears' head coach vacancy. He started his coaching career in 1975 but has never been a college coach, not even as an assistant.

Other coaches who have interviewed for the job per 247Sports include Tulane’s Jon Sumrall, Army’s Jeff Monken, Georgia defensive coordinator Glenn Schumann and UNC interim coach Freddie Kitchens. Iowa State coach Matt Campbell is viewed as a leading candidate for the position but is currently focused on the Big 12 Championship Game as the Cyclones face Arizona State this Saturday with a College Football Playoff berth on the line. Alabama defensive coordinator Kane Wommack is also expected to interview for the position.

Per Inside Carolina’s report, Campbell and Sumrall are seen as the “most likely” hires for the Tar Heels.
