We’re four weeks in and we’ve already seen Clay Helton get dumped at USC. (Randy Edsall at UConn was the first but the Huskies aren’t P5.)

  • Mike Norvell at FSU has got to be getting uncomfortable. He’s 3-10 overall, 0-4 this year, including a loss to FCS Jacksonville State on the last play of the game. The only game they might win this year is against UMass. The last time FSU was 0-4 was nearly 50 years ago in 1974. Bobby Bowden was hired a year later after Darrell Mudra went 2-18 in two seasons; Norvell is on that kind of pace.
  • Virginia’s Bronco Mendenhall is 32-34 overall, 2-2 and in last place in the ACC Coastal this year, which is like being in last place in the B1G West, which brings us to:
  • Scott Frost at Nebraska, where the natives are getting restless with their native son. He’s 14-23 in 3+ seasons, including 2-3 so far this year and still has to play Michigan, Ohio State and Iowa. The Cornhuskers might not be favored to win another game this year.
  • Cal’s Justin Wilcox is 22-24 overall but 2-6 in his last eight games, including 1-3 so far this year. His contract is laced with performance incentives and expires after 2023. His buyout doesn’t appear to be substantial but Cal’s athletic department is straddled with debt and might want to just ride it out for a couple more years.
  • I don’t think Mack Brown is in any danger of getting fired but he’s clearly underachieving at UNC, where he has a generational talent at QB in Sam Howell. He’s 70 years old and could be feeling it and might be ready to retire again.

There are others whose teams aren’t faring well but they’re in their first or second year and coaching at schools that might be willing to be more patient, such as Bret Bielema (Illinois), Jedd Fisch (Arizona), Karl Dorrell (Colorado), and Lance Leopold (Kansas).

Most schools have finished the OCC portions of their schedules and will face conference foes from here on out. Some coaches with decent records at this point, e.g., LSU’s Ed Orgeron, Purdue’s Brian Brohm, and Syracuse’s Dino Barbers, who are all 3-1, could begin feeling the heat if their teams flounder in conference play.

But the truth is, not many P5 jobs open in most years, much less good P5 jobs, and opportunities for G5 head coaches and P5 coordinators to move up are often few and far between.
