Before I even address his comments, I would like to just put out there that I dislike him just as much as the next OSU fan but what's that thing again that they say about broken clocks?
I think Dabo hits it right on the head here and I think he has a very good solution. The transfer portal like all well intended changes, and I would call the transfer portal a good change, has its negative side effects. Nothing is perfect. These kids are not mature enough to be making these big decisions and a lot of them are being hurt. There are a lot of kids where transferring is the right choice, but there are also a lot where it simply isn't highlighted by the number in the portal now (article says roughly 2,000) that have nowhere to go.
His solution is something I had never thought of and I think it would be a near perfect solution. You can transfer and you don't lose a year of eligibility but you still have to wait a year to play (I'm sure there would be certain situations that could arise where a governing body could decide to waive it upon appeal)
I think a high majority of players who transfer do not benefit from the transfer, say maybe 75% rough guess, and this would prevent a majority of the ones who are 50/50 on transferring from making this harmful decision when they probably shouldn't without limiting their eligibility if they do decide to transfer. If nothing else it would get them to stick out another year to see what improvements they can make in their current situation and then if nothing changes after a year they can still transfer.
My guess is for more players than not that extra year would turn out to be the right decision.
What do we think?
