There are some who have dubbed Michigan “the Harvard of the Midwest.”
I would question the validity of that description but, the truth is, Michigan might have the opportunity to deserve that moniker in the very near future.

By that, I mean: Michigan may well have the chance shortly to confront a serious scandal and take the kind of decisive action Harvard did in 2016 when, late in the season, with its team in first place, it shut down the team’s season.

Admittedly, this was for varsity men’s soccer—with no revenue implications on the line—but the issues of principles and integrity were somewhat similar.  (See full story below.)

If the allegations of the sign-stealing scandal prove to be true and it turns out that Michigan’s players have been aware of what’s going on, then I say, yes, Michigan should have the backbone to do what Harvard’s administration did: take away the remainder of their season.  That’s the greatest punishment you could inflict on any athlete.

if the players have zero idea of what has been done illicitly—again, this is assuming the allegations turn out to be true—but certain coaches were aware and very much part of the scheme, then at the very least those coaches should be suspended immediately without pay for the rest of the season (and probably fired as well).

Michigan is absolutely in a position to get to the bottom of this very quickly and take major punitive actions if justified.  And, in that case, I would be very happy to salute Michigan as the Harvard of the Midwest.
