Do we think that JJ MCCarthy can read a defense at game speed? It seems likely that he has almost never had to — there is no “reading and reacting” when you know where the defense will and will not be pre-snap. Looking at the last three games when he likely had less information about the opposing defenses, agsinst TCU last year, he was 20-34 with two interceptions. Against Bowling Green this year, he was 8-13 with three picks. Against Purdue this year (when Michigan was huddling and looking to their sideline for play calls — unusual for them as they used to just get to the line and go) he was 24-37. He looked confused when Purdue changed showed man and dropped into zone at the snap.
Curious if any football analysts have looked at the possibility that he may not be able to read defenses because he has almost zero experience reading defenses? He obviously has talent and can do some good things with his arms and legs. Trying to keep this analytical, nothing personal about the kid.
