Looking at the way the bracket shakes out, now that we have the first CFP rankings, it's pretty interesting to contemplate where you want to be ranked.

Because the #5 seed is always going to be the best Big Ten or SEC team that did not win its conference, it is likely to be a team you don't want to play. If you are the 1 seed, you probably are playing a good/not great team in the quarters, and probably the 5 seed, and not the 4 seed, most years in the semifinals.
If you are the 2 seed, you are playing a different good/not great team in the quarters, and you are either playing the 3 seed (the best of the Big 12 or ACC) or the 6 seed in the semis. I would bet most years, the 5 seed is going to be better than the 3 seed (and the committee already decided it's better than the 6 seed). So your path to the finals is better as the 2 seed than the 1 seed.
