This is a blatantly stolen post idea from the 11W staff, however I think it bears writing due to the discussions that have been had for a while on this board regarding the coaching staff. A lot of words have been bandied about regarding a change in regime. So I decided to FOIA the performance reviews of the staff to see what the administration seemed to think of their performance. Only Coach Myers' was available. And spoiler:
Change ain't happenin.
The most recent rating for Nick Myers comes out as "Excellent" from his reviewer, Janine Oman. Oman is the Senior Deputy Athletic Director who oversees the lacrosse teams. And, in a vacuum, it's actually fairly easy to see why Oman gave him that rating.
But first, let's roll through his goals:
BEAT TUN
Creators Trophy (Go undefeated against PSU and TTUN)
B1G Championship
NCAA Tournament / National Title Team
GPA over 3.5
150 Hours of Service
Navigate the Covid Protocols and be a point of pride for dept in how we handle.
Develop and integrate our new assistant coaches
Play a larger role on offense and see goals per game improve
Players get drafted in both NLL and PLL
Players moving on and exhausting all have job or school option lined up
Going down the list, you can say that 8 of 11 goals were accomplished, though degrees of success could vary. The goals per game definitely didn't improve the way you would want. But the problem was defense for Ohio State, so that's a pass. otherwise, the title goals and Creator's Trophy were always going to be stretch goals in a Covid season.
Myers wanted to grow in the following:
Meet with Chet every week - Read and write more than I have ever have in my life
Take an approach with men that is a bit more nurturing in nature due to the circumstances this season
Make it a priority to communicate even more with families of players as well as check in 1v1 with guys more than I ever have
Continue to be curious with coaches that I really admire to learn and grow from their experiences and wisdom.
Continue to study the changing recruiting, rules changes in our sport in effort to maximize what OSU can do in both spaces
Fundraise and help design the Lacrosse Stadium!
Let's be honest, the Lacrosse Stadium, which was just announced, probably got Myers 12 more years at OSU if he wants it. Why?
Think about it like this. You walk into your boss's office on Monday and tell them that you're going to build a new office building/supply chain/fleet for the company. Not only are you going to do that, you're going to do so without using a single dollar from the company ledgers. And, to top it all off, you're going to do it in less than 24 months. That's what Myers did with that lacrosse stadium, and that will get you all the loyalty in the world. While there are plenty of things I don't think have been done perfectly, or even correctly (hello, transfer portal 2020), Myers has done more for Ohio State during his tenure than any 3 coaches before him. Including Breschi.
And, having said all that, the most uplifting portion of the review is this gem in opportunities for development:
"Maximize the transfer portal and sign 22 class we have verbally committed"
That's huge. Transfer portal is going to be key, and will help the Buckeyes a lot if they can do the right things. It's nice to see the issues we've highlighted here being addressed at the very top.
If there's interest, I'll get the assistant coaches' reviews when they're available.
Lots to ponder. And be excited about!
Go Bucks!
