COLUMBUS, Ohio – Entering the third period down 1-0, the Ohio State men’s hockey team scored twice in a 42-second span to tie the game and take the lead and added two more goals before the end of regulation to defeat No. 16 Penn State, 4-1, Saturday in Value City Arena. The win gives Ohio State a sweep of the weekend series with the Nittany Lions, with a 5-2 victory Friday.
The Buckeyes, winners of three in a row, improve to 6-2-0 overall and 3-1-0 in the B1G, with the Nittany Lions falling to 6-3-0 and 0-2-0 in league play.
The Nittany Lions scored 3:48 into the game but did not find the back of the net the rest of the way, with Buckeye rookie goalie Jakub Dobeš stopping the final 26 shots. Ohio State took control in the third period. At 4:30 freshman defenseman Mason Lohrei tied the game and just 42 seconds later junior blueliner Dominic Vidoli put the Buckeyes in the lead. Sophomore Joe Dunlap added an insurance goal at 13:11 and senior Mark Cheremeta sealed the win with an empty net goal at 17:53. Lohrei and Cheremeta both had two-point nights with a goal and an assist, while senior Jake Wise had two assists.
