Ohio State women’s hockey star Sophie Jaques is a top-three finalist for the sport’s most prestigious individual award for the second year in a row.
Jaques was named Wednesday as one of three finalists for the Patty Kazmaier Award, the equivalent of the Heisman Trophy in women’s college hockey. She is up for the award alongside Northeastern’s Alina Mueller and Colgate’s Danielle Serdachny.

Ohio State coach Nadine Muzerall said she was “very upset” Jaques did not win the award last year after she broke Ohio State’s single-season school record with 59 points, the second-most ever for a defenseman in women’s college hockey, while leading the Buckeyes to their first-ever national championship.
Jaques has followed that up with another highly productive season this year, totaling 46 points (22 goals, 24 assists) while leading Ohio State to the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for the second year in a row. She’s tied for second in the nation with eight power-play goals, leads the Buckeyes with 47 blocked shots and is just the fifth defenseman in NCAA history to record back-to-back seasons with 40+ points.
The winner of the Patty Kazmaier Award will be announced March 18 in conjunction with the Frozen Four in Duluth, Minnesota. The Buckeyes will look to earn a spot in the Frozen Four this Saturday at 5 p.m. at the OSU Ice Rink, where they will play either Penn State or Quinnipiac in the NCAA quarterfinals.
