With a much less difficult opponent came a much more comfortable victory. Ohio State demolished Detroit Mercy in just about every facet, even after putting in all the subs at halftime.
The opening two quarters saw Ohio State limit Detroit Mercy to just 8 shots, and 2 goals on those shots. Skylar Wahlund had little to do, and the Buckeyes are happy to have that. It's been a long stretch of getting shellacked, and the rest will do him good.
The Buckeyes dominated the faceoff X also, winning 20 of 29 draws for a nice winning percentage of .690. Could have probably been a little better, but this game could have been in the 30s if Ohio State wanted to reach that number.
Offensively, Ed Shean led the way with 5 goals, Jack Myers had 5 assists, and many others scored a couple of tallies. Right now, the biggest question marks are at attack, weirdly enough. Matt Caputo is the third different lefty attackman to get a start. Richie LaCalandra didn't play at all. He either REALLY screwed up, or is hurt too. Colby Smith didn't start, either.
This is just an offense, and team, in complete disarray. Only Detroit Mercy's complete lack of competence allowed the Buckeyes to dominate with the ball the way they did. We will take it, though. The Buckeyes weren't that far off from scoring more goals today than in their previous 3 combined.
On the downside, Man Down wasn't great, as the Titans scored nearly all their goals on Man Up. Buckeyes committed more turnovers than is acceptable, and committed a TON of penalties. Execution hasn't been good for a few years now. Something to watch.
All in all, this was a gimme game with zero implications for the future, aside from ensuring that we still don't know what Ohio State's best starting lineup is on O. Maybe 2024 will be better that way.
Up next: Denver.
Go Bucks!
