Team won the Big Ten title in 1961.
Against Indiana, he broke the school and Big Ten record with a 48-yard field goal in the 21-0 win on October 5, 1963.
On October 12, 1963, Raaphorst's 49 yard FG tied the game against Illinois and broke his own record.

6-1, 210 (pounds)...may be one of Ohio State's all-time great place kickers...made 23 of 27 extra points as a sophomore and 19 of 21 last year, plus one that was blocked...kicked four of six field goals in 1961 and two of three last year...
won the Indiana game last year 10-7 on a dramatic 26 yard field goal in the final eight seconds...suffered a severe knee injury on this play, requiring an operation in March...

Ballard grew up in Springboro, Ohio. He went to Springboro High Schooland started on both sides of the ball in football and started on the basketball team. He attended The Ohio State University, where he caught 34 passes for 377 yards with an average of 11 yards per catch. He also caught three touchdown passes. During his senior year, he was one of Ohio State's six captains.
During the 2010 Rose Bowl, he made a critical catch that helped Ohio State beat Oregon. In the 4th quarter with nine minutes remaining Ohio State up 19-17 facing 3rd and 13 from their own 45, Ballard, while being surrounded by several Oregon defenders, jumped and caught a high pass thrown by Terrelle Pryor for 24 yards and a critical first down. The drive concluded with the game-clinching touchdown that put Ohio State up 26-17, which would be the final score.
Ballard's Super Bowl experience per Wikipedia:
Ballard played in Super Bowl XLVI but left in the second half with a torn ACL in his left knee. After leaving the field, he attempted to run and cut on the sideline, but collapsed unable to reach full speed. Replacing Ballard was teammate Bear Pascoe, who finished the game with 4 catches for 33 receiving yards. The Giants defeated the Patriots in the Super Bowl 21-17.
