I was surprised to hear a short while ago that this was only LSU’s 4th national title in the AP Poll era (and the announcers were referring to combined AP titles and the BCS title LSU won in 2003 when USC finished as AP #1), I think that was the only split title in the BCS/CFP era.
So I looked at the list of AP champions, and it was fascinating to see how few Nattys some of the major powerhouses have won. Prior to the late 1960s, the final poll was done prior to the Bowl games.
Here is the list of the teams with at least three titles—and please notice which team is not on this list despite the fact that its fans like to think they root for the most storied program in college football:
