Hey everyone,
As we await the return of the current Ohio State football team to the field, we're going to be doing a Mount Rushmore series here at Eleven Warriors – highlighting the four greatest Buckeyes at each position – and we want your input on which Buckeye greats deserve the honor.
We're kicking off the series with the Mount Rushmore of Ohio State quarterbacks, where we'll recognize four of the best signal-callers in school history, and we've selected the following 15 quarterbacks as nominees for your votes:
- Jim McDonald (1935-37): 1937 first-team All-American, captained Ohio State to 6-2 season, No. 2 overall pick in 1938 NFL draft
- Don Scott (1938-40): Two-time first-team All-American, led Ohio State to 1939 Big Ten championship, OSU Airport named after him
- Les Horvath (1941-42, 44): Led Ohio State to national championship in 1942 and won Heisman Trophy and Big Ten Championship in 1944 as quarterback/halfback
- Rex Kern (1968-70): Led Ohio State to national championship in 1968, first-team All-American in 1969, 25-2 record as starting quarterback, 18th in school history in passing yards (2,444) and 17th in total offense (4,158)
- Cornelius Green (1973-75): First Black starting quarterback at Ohio State, two-time first-team All-Big Ten, 1975 Silver Football winner, 31-3-1 as starting quarterback, 16th in school history in total offense (4,414) and 20th in passing yards (2,348), 11th in total touchdowns (44)
- Art Schlichter (1978-81): First-team All-American in 1979, two-time first-team All-Big Ten, 1981 Silver Football winner, 2nd in school history in passing yards (7,547) and total offense (8,850), 3rd in total touchdowns (85), 36-11-1 record as starting quarterback
- Bobby Hoying (1992-95): First-team All-Big Ten in 1995, 2nd in school history in career touchdown passes (57), 3rd in passing yards (7,232) and 4th in total offense (7,151), 30-6-1 record as starting quarterback
- Joe Germaine (1996-98): 1998 Silver Football winner and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, 4th in school history in passing yards (6,370), 14-2 record as starting quarterback
- Craig Krenzel (2001-03): Led Ohio State to 14-0 record and national championship in 2002, 12th in school history in passing yards (4,493) and 13th in total offense (5,097), 24-3 record as starting quarterback
- Troy Smith (2004-06): 2006 Heisman Trophy winner and unanimous All-American, 4th in school history in total touchdowns (68), 5th in total offense (6,888) and 7th in passing yards (5,720), 25-3 record as starting quarterback
- Terrelle Pryor (2008-10): (Includes vacated statistics for 2010 season) 31-4 record as starting quarterback, would be 4th in school history in total offense (8,341) and total touchdowns (76) and 6th in passing yards (6,177)
- Braxton Miller (2011-15): Two-time Silver Football winner and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, 2nd in school history in total touchdowns (88), 3rd in total offense (8,609), 7th in rushing yards (3,314) and 10th in passing yards (5,292), 26-8 record as starting quarterback
- J.T. Barrett (2014-17): Three-time Big Ten Quarterback of the Year, holds school records for wins by a starting quarterback (38), career passing yards (9,434), total offense (12,697), only starting quarterback with four wins over Michigan
- Dwayne Haskins (2016-18): Heisman Trophy finalist, Silver Football winner and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year in 2018, holds single-season school records for passing yards (4,831), passing touchdowns (50) and total offense (4,939), career leader in passing efficiency (173.9), completion percentage (70%), 300-yard passing games (9) and 400-yard passing games (5), led Ohio State to 13-1 record and Big Ten championship in 2018
- Justin Fields (2019-): Heisman Trophy finalist and Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, led Ohio State to 13-1 record and Big Ten championship in 2019, first quarterback in Big Ten history with 40 passing TDs and 10 rushing TDs in single season
