This past weekend's game was all things good, in the end. It was typically Penn State, dark magic, freak plays, frustrating as all hell during it for the most part.
Obviously a ton of conversation after the game has been dedicated to a resurgent O-line that got the job done, and then some, against one of the better defensive lines they'll see all season...all while the whole left side had never played those positions before. And a majority of that conversation centers around a great game plan from Chip Kelly, Ryan Day's success in a Top 5 game, and the players themselves.
But why isn't anyone talking about Frye?
In every single game we don't have rousing success this entire board is asking to fire Frye. And when you look at our depth on paper, there's plenty of criticism that is deserved. Our line has played below their talent level under his tutelage many times, and the problems are well-discussed. But Frye is also the coach who had two guys come in and start brand new positions and hold their own against an eventual All-American and other very good defensive linemen. The depth appears to actually be there, far more than we believed as a fanbase.
Let's not forget this coach as well when we're praising this team after Saturday. After all, these are Frye's guys doing the work. If he can be bashed incessantly when we don't find success, he deserves to be praised when we do. And he deserves it even more when we do it under circumstance he can't control (injuries to two different LTs).
Kudos to Frye for figuring out the best alignment for Saturday and coaching these guys up to execute under really shitty circumstances. They did a great job and have a ton of lessons learned to continue to improve during this home stretch of the season.
