Caleb Downs and Seth McLaughlin added another All-American honor on Friday as the Ohio State safety and center were each named first-team All-Americans by the American Football Coaches Association.
Having also been named first-team All-Americans by the Walter Camp Football Foundation on Thursday, Downs and McLaughlin have now earned the first two of the five first-team All-American designations needed to become unanimous All-Americans. They’ll become consensus All-Americans if they earn just one first-team All-American nod from the AP (released Monday), FWAA (Tuesday) or Sporting News (Wednesday).
Jeremiah Smith, the first Ohio State freshman wide receiver to ever earn All-American honors, earned another second-team All-American honor from the AFCA after landing on the Walter Camp second team on Thursday night.
Donovan Jackson, who’s played two positions for Ohio State as he made a midseason switch from left guard to left tackle following Josh Simmons’ season-ending knee injury, also earned second-team honors from the AFCA. He was also named a Senior Bowl All-American earlier this week.
