I’ll give credit where it’s due. Wink Martindale made a great decision to drop his M.O and sit in zone coverage all game. It obviously worked well. Michigan was blitzing like crazy most of the year, and simply stopped on Nov. 30th. If you told me Michigan had 0 sacks and we still lost, I’d be in awe (still am). Here’s my point…Notre Dame certainly doesn’t have the personnel on the interior or edges that Michigan had, but they do have a very good secondary. The question is does Notre Dame break their tendency of blitzing heavy and playing man for the National Championship? If they do not, I like our odds. Even if we give up a few sacks, the big plays that’ll come from 1v1s outside will make up for it. Ryan Day tears apart man coverages and definitely struggles more vs. zone. Will Howard is also amazing throwing on man coverage and is among the best in the country when blitzed. I’d say Notre Dame’s best chance is to do what Texas/Michigan did (I know they weren’t exactly the same) and hope their DLine can hold up in light boxes. I personally do not think they’ll do this, maybe a little, but when you are a top defense in the country it is hard to change your philosophy for just one game. I hope Al Golden has confidence that their current strategy will work, because I sure don’t.
