The New England Patriots are releasing veteran Cam Newton and rookie Mac Jones will be the starter after the two had battled for the quarterback job since training camp, ESPN has confirmed.
Newton started Sunday and played two series, all with the starters. Jones, who was the No. 15 pick out of Alabama, relieved him and played deep into the third quarter, all with the backups.

This is one of the more surprising cuts I can remember right before the season starts. It also means Mac Jones, last seen carving up our Buckeyes in January, is going to start to open the season. Will be interesting to watch his career unfold compared to Fields.
In slightly related news it also appears Haskins might actually make the roster for the Steelers, but we’ll have to wait and see.
