We all love questioning coaches decisions, results, etc. I would love to get some feedback from former and current coaches, players and parents. My son is a sophomore at a D2 HS. There were a few early season ending injuries that propelled him to LG1. From week 4 on, he was full time starter.
Every week the staff posts a sheet in the locker room with the new weekly depth chart. My son was blindsided Monday as he is being benched for the playoff game. Went through the entire practice without the HC or position coach approaching him with a reason. He called me in tears asking "should I text the coach?" My response was simple..."If they cannot show you enough respect to tell you to your face, the answer is no. It is not fair but we are not going to complain. We are going to handle this like a man and support your teammates."
The reality is I am pissed. As most parents would be. Flash back to the last game...we got smoked. No one played well. 1 lineman was benched at half for poor performance. But he is starting.
I can go on and on about my frustrations with this staff. They grade every starter each week. If the grade is low, there is no reasoning or feedback on what they need to improve on. After his 1st start, I literally forced my son to ask his position coach "what do I need to improve on in order to get a better grade?" You have to ask to get feedback. These grades are openly posted for the entire team to see. His grades have improved each and every week as far as I know.
So feedback would be appreciated...
1. IMO grading individuals is a good thing. But wouldnt it be more productive to keep these private? Or just within the position group? I believe it opens up blame and finger pointing when things dont go right. This I have seen.
2. I do not want to be labeled as "helicopter parent", but would you confront the coaches? I believe my son deserves to know why he is not starting this game. It is not grades or absences. I dont plan to say anything before Friday. But I do have a long winded email in my draft ready to send after the game. Feedback may or may not change some of the language in said email :)
