Ohio State men’s soccer is a Big Ten champion for the first time in nine years.

The Buckeyes won their first Big Ten championship since 2015 on Sunday when they defeated Maryland, 2-1, to clinch a share of the conference’s regular-season title along with Indiana.

Both teams finished the year with identical records of 7-1-2 in conference play, but the Buckeyes earned the No. 1 seed in the Big Ten Tournament by virtue of a tiebreaker.

It’s the fifth overall regular-season Big Ten championship for the Buckeyes but their first under Brian Maisonneuve, who became Ohio State’s head coach in 2018.

Ohio State’s men’s soccer team has been the best in the country this season. The Buckeyes have a 12-1-3 overall record for the year and are currently ranked as the No. 1 team in the country in the United Soccer Coaches poll, making them a contender to win their first-ever national championship.

First, the Buckeyes will look to win their first Big Ten Tournament championship since 2009. As the No. 1 seed in the tournament, Ohio State receives a bye to the semifinals and will play in a semifinal match next Sunday at 5:30 p.m. at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois. Should the Buckeyes advance to the final, they would host the championship game at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 17. Both games will be televised on Big Ten Network.
