After taking a year off from coaching, Thad Matta appears to be a serious candidate to return to the sidelines in 2018-19.

According to a report from the Associated Press, Matta interviewed for the head coaching vacancy at Georgia on Monday, just two days after the Bulldogs fired Mark Fox, who had been the head coach for the previous nine seasons.

Matta had also been reported as a candidate for the opening at Mississippi, before it was later reported he was no longer being considered for the position.

Matt's brother Greg, who coaches at North Cobb Christian School in Kennesaw, Georgia – around 90 minutes from Georgia's campus – told the AP that Thad has been itching to get back on the sidelines after taking the 2017-18 season off.

"I know Thad has always missed it," Greg Matta told the AP. "It's in his blood."

Matta was fired by Ohio State in early June following his worst season in his 13-year stretch in Columbus, in which the Buckeyes went just 17-15 and missed the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season.
