Before descending upon Columbus, the members of Select '17 have one final shot at glory under the Friday night lights.
CLARK'S KRYPTONITE
More than 5,000 people were in the stands for Friday's game between two-time defending Division I state champion Lakewood St. Edward and defending Division III state champions Archbishop Hoban.
The Eagles jumped out to a 10-0 second quarter lead behind a one-yard touchdown run from senior Curtis Szelesta, but the Knights quickly drove down the field into scoring range. The drive ended, however, when Ohio State commit Danny Clark was intercepted in the end zone.
Clark was 5-of-18 passing for 56 yards on the evening.
Former pledge Todd Sibley kept the Knights close, rushing for 143 yards on 29 carries. He scored to cut the deficit to three points with five minutes remaining, but missed the rest of the game due to cramping.
After a St. Edward fumble, Hoban had one final chance to win the game or take the lead. Clark successfully directed the offense down the field to the Eagles' 8-yard line, but St. Edward cornerback Melvin Jackson blocked the game-tying field goal attempt in the final seconds.
GAEL MARY
Just one week after it upset Trinity Christian and Ohio State commit Shaun Wade, Cocoa, Florida, traveled across the country with its sights set on knocking off top-ranked Bishop Gorman.
Quarterback Tate Martell has other plans, however.
The Gaels were leading by only two points late in the first half, but the senior tossed a 52-yard Hail Mary to receiver Brevin Jordan to begin the rout. Bishop Gorman scored 34 unanswered points thereafter, which included a 28-yard scamper and touchdown passes of 52 and 28 yards by Martell.
Next week, Bishop Gorman hosts Bellflower, California, St. John Bosco and Ohio State pledge Wyatt Davis. The Braves' defense, led by target Jaiden Woodbey, has yet to give up a single point in two games this season.
CALIFORNIA SHOOTOUT
Defense was almost non-existent on Saturday night in Mission Viejo, California, as two of the top teams in the country went touchdown for touchdown all night.
Centennial, California, took a 49-42 lead over IMG Academy with 1:06 on the clock, but Texas A&M commit Kellen Mond led the Ascenders down the field for a score with only 12 seconds left.
Instead of sending the game into overtime — to be honest, they could still be playing right now — IMG successfully converted a two-point attempt to head back to Florida with the win.
Centennial — you may recall as Tyjon Lindsey's former school — tore apart the IMG defense led by Ohio State commits Isaiah Pryor and Marcus Williamson all night. Wide receiver Xavier Marshall caught 13 passes for 204 yards and three touchdowns on his way to being named Honor Bowl MVP despite the loss.
