Before descending upon Columbus, the members of Ohio State's Supreme '18 recruiting class have one final shot at glory under the Friday night lights.
WHEN IT MATTERS MOST
Earlier this season, Owasso (OK) and Ohio State four-star safety commit Josh Proctor lost a double-overtime heartbreaker to Union. The Rams got their revenge in Friday night’s state championship, though, knocking off the Redskins, 21-14.
Owasso rushed out to a 14-0 lead thanks to Proctor, who did a little bit of everything in the first quarter. He had four catches for 27 yards and one pass for 21 yards that set up a touchdown.
Proctor was limited in the second half after coming up from a reception gingerly, but Owasso was able to hold on for the win regardless. It marked the Rams’ first state title since 1974.
THIS CLOSE
Ohio State four-star safety commit Jaiden Woodbey, meanwhile, hoped to end his career at St. John Bosco (CA) with back-to-back state championships. Mater Dei had other ideas, however, and it got revenge for last season’s final with 49-24 win on Saturday night.
The Monarchs, led by USC quarterback pledge J.T. Daniels and uncommitted five-star wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, opened up a 14-3 first-quarter lead and never looked back. Woodbey did his best to keep the Braves in it, as his 141 kick return yards set up a pair of scores on consecutive drives.
But Mater Dei’s offense was ultimately just too much to keep up with, and 21 fourth-quarter points blew the game wide open. It was the Monarchs’ first title since 1999.
HE’S UP NEXT
Hurricane Irma forced Armwood (FL) and Ohio State running back commit Brian Snead to play six games in a matter of 20 days earlier this season. Lesser programs would have folded under the pressure of such a schedule, but the Hawks now find themselves on the verge of their first state title since 2004 with a 30-6 win over St. Augustine on Friday night.
Armwood forced four turnovers and rode Snead to the tune of 20 carries for 118 yards. He also reached pay dirt on a 14-yard reception, which put the Hawks up 23-0 in the second quarter.
Armwood will now take on Miami Northwestern at Orlando’s Camping World Stadium next Friday, marking its fourth appearance in the state title game in the last five years.
