After the Browns traded the corpse of Trent Richardson to the Indianapolis Colts for a first round pick (and signed the corpse of Willis McGahee to replace him), the Browns had a need, among other things, at running back.
Carlos Hyde was taken in the second round of the NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers — one pick after Cincinnati took LSU's Jeremy Hill.
Hyde, however, thought there was a real chance he could have ended up playing professional ball in Cleveland:

In the end, the Browns moved up in the third round to poach Towson's Terrance West — another big ol' running back — from the Baltimore Ravens.
