Ohio State was able to go deep into its bench once again in Saturday’s game against Maryland at Ohio Stadium.

As the Buckeyes rolled to a 62-14 win over the Terrapins, a total of 70 Ohio State players saw the field – marking the third straight week that Ohio State has played at least 66 players.

While all 70 of those players previously saw playing time in at least one of the Buckeyes’ first five games, two players saw their first career playing time on offense or defense. Walk-on defensive end Nick Seme, who previously appeared in one game on special teams, saw playing time on defense. Former walk-on and special teams regular Zach Turnure saw playing time on offense at fullback.

A couple other Ohio State players ended up seeing significantly expanded roles from previous games due to unforeseen circumstances. Matthew Burrell played a season-high 69 snaps at right guard after Branden Bowen went down with a season-ending injury, while freshman cornerback Jeffrey Okudah saw playing time with the first-team nickel defense after Denzel Ward was ejected for a targeting penalty.

It’s time for our weekly look at every Buckeye who played on Saturday, how many snaps and where each of them played and how many snaps each Buckeye has played this season.

Author’s note: All snap counts listed in this article were tracked by Eleven Warriors through film review and should be considered unofficial, as Ohio State does not release its official snap counts. The players listed with each special teams unit are the players who were on the field with those units most frequently, but exact special teams snap counts are not included because it is not always possible to identify all 11 players on a special teams unit from TV camera angles.

Quarterbacks

J.T. Barrett: 70 snaps

Dwayne Haskins: 22

Haskins saw playing time as for a fourth consecutive game as Ohio State cruised to its fourth straight blowout win. With the Buckeyes already up 48-7, Ohio State’s No. 2 quarterback replaced Barrett for the Buckeyes’ final possession of the third quarter and remained in the game for the entire fourth quarter. Third-string quarterback Joe Burrow, who saw playing time in each of Ohio State’s previous two games, did not see playing time on Saturday.

Running Backs

Mike Weber: 38

J.K. Dobbins: 35

Antonio Williams: 8

Demario McCall: 7

Jared Drake: 3

While Dobbins started Saturday’s game as he has started every game for the Buckeyes this season, Weber led Ohio State’s running backs in snaps played for the second week in a row. With Weber now fully recovered from the hamstring injury that plagued him for the first third of Ohio State’s regular season, the Buckeyes appear set to have a true timeshare between its top two running backs.

Dobbins and Weber played every snap at running back for the first three quarters of Saturday’s game, with McCall and Williams splitting snaps for most of the fourth quarter before Drake entered the game for the final three snaps.

Fullbacks

Zach Turnure: 8

While Ohio State typically doesn’t use a traditional lead-blocking fullback, the Buckeyes experimented with Turnure playing that role on multiple series during the third and fourth quarters against Maryland. Turnure, who is listed on Ohio State’s roster as a linebacker, has played in all six of the Buckeyes’ games this season on special teams but had not played on offense or defense until Saturday.

Wide Receivers

Terry McLaurin: 54

K.J. Hill: 45

Binjimen Victor: 39

Austin Mack: 38

Johnnie Dixon: 36

Parris Campbell: 30

C.J. Saunders: 18

Jaylen Harris: 17

Elijaah Goins: Special teams only

Ohio State’s top six receivers continued to rotate in and out of the lineup with one another as usual for the first three quarters of Saturday’s game. Saunders played every snap of the fourth quarter at slot receiver, while Harris played every snap of the fourth quarter at X receiver, while McLaurin, Dixon and Victor each saw snaps at Z receiver with the backups in the fourth quarter. True freshman wide receiver Trevon Grimes, who previously saw playing time against Army and UNLV, was absent for a second week in a row.

Tight Ends

Marcus Baugh: 53

Rashod Berry: 17

Luke Farrell: 11

Jake Hausmann: 3

As has been the case in most games, Baugh played the majority of tight end snaps with the first-team offense but Berry and Farrell also had opportunities to rotate in with the starters. Berry and Farrell continued to see most of the playing time with the backups in the fourth quarter, though Hausmann saw the field for three snaps for his third game appearance this season.

Offensive Linemen

Jamarco Jones: 74

Michael Jordan: 74

Isaiah Prince: 74

Billy Price: 70

Matthew Burrell: 69

Branden Bowen: 23

Brady Taylor: 22

Joshua Alabi: 18

Thayer Munford: 18

Malcolm Pridgeon: 18

Demetrius Knox: Special teams only

Kevin Woidke: Special teams only

Burrell replaced Bowen at right guard late in the first quarter of Saturday’s game, when Bowen went down with his aforementioned injury, and remained in the lineup for the rest of the game. Taylor replaced Price at center for the final possession of the third quarter and remained in for the fourth quarter, for which Alabi replaced Jones at left tackle, Pridgeon replaced Jordan at left guard and Munford replaced Prince at right tackle.

Matthew Burrell
Matthew Burrell was called upon to play with the first-team offensive line after Branden Bowen went down with an injury.
Defensive Ends

Sam Hubbard: 28

Tyquan Lewis: 28

Chase Young: 22

Nick Bosa: 20

Jonathon Cooper: 19

Nick Seme: 9

Hubbard, Lewis and Bosa rotated in and out to play a majority of the defensive end snaps in Ohio State’s 4-3 base defense, while all three were on the field along with Jalyn Holmes in the Buckeyes’ nickel defense, for the first half and first two second-half defensive series of Saturday’s game. With Holmes playing defensive tackle in the base defense for a second week in a row, Hubbard and Lewis saw a slightly higher percentage of defensive end snaps over Bosa than they have in previous games this season.

Young and Cooper saw occasional snaps with Ohio State’s first-team defense on Saturday, then played the majority of snaps once the Buckeyes turned to their defensive backups, though the Buckeyes also worked Seme into the backup rotation for the first time this season in the third and fourth quarters.

Defensive Tackles

Jalyn Holmes: 29

Davon Hamilton: 17

Robert Landers: 16

Jashon Cornell: 14

Tracy Sprinkle: 12

Haskell Garrett: 11

Holmes started in place of injured Dre’Mont Jones at the 3-technique defensive tackle position for the second week in a row, and led all Ohio State defensive linemen in snaps played for the second week in a row as he also continued to play a regular role as one of the Buckeyes’ four Rushmen on their nickel defense.

Holmes and Sprinkle, who started his sixth straight game at nose tackle to begin the season, played only with the first-team defense on Saturday. Landers and Cornell rotated in with the first-team defense, per usual, but continued to rotate into the lineup – including nickel packages – with the second-team defense in the third and fourth quarters. Hamilton and Garrett played most of the fourth-quarter snaps at defensive tackle, though Hamilton also saw some rotational snaps at nose tackle with the first-team defense earlier in the game.

Linebackers

Jerome Baker: 35

Dante Booker: 25

Baron Browning: 23

Malik Harrison: 22

Tuf Borland: 17

Keandre Jones: 12

Pete Werner: 9

Justin Hilliard: 8

Baker played every one of Ohio State’s defensive snaps in the first half and its first defensive series of the second half before coming of Saturday’s game. With Chris Worley sidelined for a third consecutive game, Borland started at middle linebacker and Booker started at strongside linebacker while Harrison played alongside Baker in the first-team nickel defense.

Browning also saw some playing time at middle linebacker in place of Borland with the first-team defense, then continued to see playing time in the third and fourth quarters alongside Harrison and Werner at strongside linebacker and Jones and Hilliard at weakside linebacker. Booker also played a couple late-game snaps with the second-team nickel defense.

Cornerbacks

Kendall Sheffield: 37

Damon Arnette: 35

Jeffrey Okudah: 27

Marcus Williamson: 17

Amir Riep: 7

Denzel Ward: 5

Trevon Forte: Special teams only

With Ward disqualified for targeting on Ohio State’s second defensive series of the game, Arnette and Sheffield played nearly every snap with the first-team defense, instead of rotating in and out on the base defense as they usually do. Okudah substituted in with the first-team defense in nickel packages once Ward was disqualified from the game, then played every down with the backup defense until the final defensive series of the game.

Williamson substituted for Sheffield late in the third quarter and proceeded to play the rest of the game, while Riep played all of his defensive snaps in the fourth quarter – first as the third cornerback in the nickel defense, then in the base defense on the Buckeyes’ final defensive series of the game.

Safeties

Damon Webb: 39

Jordan Fuller: 39

Isaiah Pryor: 17

Jahsen Wint: 17

Wayne Davis: Special teams only

Brendon White: Special teams only

With Erick Smith absent for a second straight game, Webb and Fuller played every defensive snap at safety until the final series of the third quarter. Pryor and Wint proceeded to play the final series of the third quarter and every defensive play of the fourth quarter.

Branden Bowen or Matthew Burrell (blocker)

Jonathon Cooper (blocker)

Davon Hamilton (blocker)

Demetrius Knox (blocker)

Thayer Munford or Kevin Woidke (blocker)

Malcolm Pridgeon (blocker)

Brady Taylor (blocker)

Ohio State began the game using an identical unit for its place kicking unit as it did against Rutgers. Burrell replaced Bowen at the left tackle spot after Bowen’s injury took him out of the game. Woidke, who did not travel with the Buckeyes to Rutgers, replaced Munford at the right tackle spot in the second half on Saturday’s game.

Kickoffs

Sean Nuernberger or Blake Haubeil (kicker)

Baron Browning (gunner)

Elijaah Goins (gunner)

Justin Hilliard (gunner)

Keandre Jones (gunner)

Jeffrey Okudah (gunner)

Isaiah Pryor (gunner)

Amir Riep (gunner)

Zach Turnure (gunner)

Pete Werner (gunner)

Marcus Williamson (gunner)

Nuernberger replaced Haubeil as Ohio State’s starting kickoff specialist for Saturday’s game, but Haubeil took over kickoff duties once again in the second half after Nuernberger knocked the opening kickoff of the second half out of bounds.

Williamson was added to Ohio State’s primary kickoff coverage unit this week in place of Jahsen Wint, who was suspended for the first half of Saturday’s game after being ejected for targeting against Rutgers. Okudah started on kickoff coverage in place of Austin Mack, who played only on offense Saturday after suffering a minor hamstring injury last week.

A multitude of additional players substituted into the coverage team’s lineup for at least one kickoff in the second half of Saturday’s game, including Jared Drake, Trevon Forte, Wayne Davis and Brendon White.

Kickoff Returns

Parris Campbell or Demario McCall (primary returner)

K.J. Hill or Jared Drake (secondary returner)

Tuf Borland or Luke Farrell (blocker)

Johnnie Dixon or Jahsen Wint (blocker)

Jordan Fuller or Brendon White (blocker)

Elijaah Goins or Wayne Davis (blocker)

Malik Harrison or Pete Werner (blocker)

Justin Hilliard (blocker)

Keandre Jones or Marcus Williamson (blocker)

Jeffrey Okudah (blocker)

Zach Turnure (blocker)

With the exception of Okudah replacing Mack, Ohio State kept its primary kickoff return unit intact from the previous week’s game for each of its two first-half kickoff returns. The Buckeyes substituted different players into the lineup for their lone second-half kickoff return, with Drake gaining 14 yards on his first career kickoff return.

Punts

Drue Chrisman (punter)

Liam McCullough (long snapper)

Tuf Borland (upback)

Sam Hubbard (upback)

Zach Turnure (guard)

Pete Werner or Malik Harrison (guard)

Jerome Baker (tackle)

Keandre Jones (wing)

Elijaah Goins or Isaiah Pryor (gunner)

Terry McLaurin (gunner)

Marcus Williamson (gunner)

Williamson was a new addition to Ohio State’s punting unit on Saturday, taking the field for each of the Buckeyes’ two punts as a gunner. Each of the other players who took the field for one of the Buckeyes’ two punts had already made at least one appearance on the punt team this season.

Punt Returns

K.J. Hill or Demario McCall (returner)

Damon Arnette or Marcus Williamson (blocker/rusher)

Rashod Berry (blocker/rusher)

Jonathon Cooper (blocker/rusher)

Justin Hilliard (blocker/rusher)

Keandre Jones (blocker/rusher)

Terry McLaurin (blocker/rusher)

Amir Riep or Marcus Williamson (blocker/rusher)

Kendall Sheffield or Jeffrey Okudah (blocker/rusher)

Damon Webb (blocker/rusher)

Pete Werner (blocker/rusher)

Riep was a new addition to the punt return unit this week, though he was taken off the unit in the third quarter of Saturday’s game after committing an illegal block in the back penalty on Ohio State’s final punt return opportunity of the first half. With the exception of a few Maryland punts where the Buckeyes kept most of their regular defenders on the field, Ohio State kept the rest of its punt return unit consistent on Saturday until the fourth quarter, when McCall replaced Hill as punt returner and Williamson and Okudah replaced Arnette and Sheffield on the outsides of the formation.
