The Ohio State career of redshirt sophomore backup tight end A.J. Alexander is over, the university announced Tuesday. Alexander will serve the remainder of his time in Columbus on medical scholarship.
The Burke, Va. native missed the 2017 regular season after suffering a knee injury in June while playing in a pickup basketball game.
Alexander signed with the Buckeyes as a three-star athlete in 2015. He finishes his Buckeye career with four receptions for 27 yards, all compiled in 2016, when he appeared in all 13 games.
As for where that leaves the current Buckeye TE depth:
With A.J. Alexander on medical scholarship and Kierre Hawkins transferring to Youngstown State, Ohio State has only three returning tight ends for 2018: Rashod Berry, Luke Farrell and Jake Hausmann.

The good news: Jeremy Ruckert is the top-ranked tight end in the class of 2018.
