Garrett Wilson is the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year.

The former Ohio State wide receiver was officially named the NFL’s top offensive rookie for the 2022 season by the Associated Press at Thursday night’s NFL Honors ceremony.

Wilson wins the award after a prolific rookie season in which he caught 83 passes for 1,103 yards – breaking franchise rookie records in both categories – and four touchdowns in his first season with the New York Jets, who selected him with the No. 10 overall pick in last year’s NFL draft.

He edged out Seattle Seahawks running back Kenneth Walker, who actually received one more first-place vote than Wilson (19 to 18), by receiving more than twice as many as second-place votes as Walker (19 to 8) to finish with 156 total voting points to Walker’s 129. Fellow former Ohio State wide receiver Chris Olave received five first-place votes and finished fourth in Offensive Rookie of the Year voting behind Wilson, Walker and San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy.

Wilson becomes the first former Ohio State player to win the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Award since Eddie George in 1996. Former Ohio State running back John Brockington also won the award in 1971.

That said, he becomes the fifth Buckeye in the last seven years to win an AP NFL Rookie of the Year Award on either side of the ball. Ohio State had a run of four AP NFL Defensive Rookies of the Year in five years when Joey Bosa won the award in 2016, Marshon Lattimore won the award in 2017, Nick Bosa won the award in 2019 and Chase Young won the award in 2020.

Wilson was one of two former Ohio State players to win an award at Thursday night’s NFL honors along with Nick Bosa, who won the AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year Award.
