An Ohio State legend kicked off the Cleveland Guardians' three-game home series with the Minnesota Twins on Friday.

Jim Tressel, Ohio State football's national-championship-winning head coach from 2001-2010, threw out the first pitch before the Guardians' series opener with the Twins to celebrate Youngstown State University Night.

Tressel coached the Penguins' football program for 15 seasons before he arrived in Columbus and won four national championships in the NCAA's Division I-AA. He later returned to Youngstown State as the school's president in 2014 and held that role for nine years until his retirement in February 2023.

In 10 seasons at Ohio State, Tressel led the program to 106 wins in 128 games, including a victory in the 2002 BCS national championship over the Miami Hurricanes. Tressel returned to the title game twice with the Buckeyes in 2006 and 2007, where his teams ultimately fell to Florida and LSU, respectively.  He also recorded a 9-1 record against Michigan.

Tressel resigned as Ohio State's head coach in 2011 following "Tattoogate," an incident that resulted in five of his players – Terrelle Pryor, DeVier Posey, Dan "Boom" Herron, Mike Adams and Solomon Thomas – receiving punishment for selling personal memorabilia in exchange for tattoos, a violation of NCAA rules.
