Ohio State added a longtime NFL coach to its staff on Tuesday.
The Buckeyes have hired former Miami Dolphins head coach and Super Bowl-winning Green Bay Packers offensive coordinator Joe Philbin as an offensive analyst. Ohio State's new hire was first reported by ESPN's Pete Thamel, and Philbin is now listed in the university's staff directory.
Philbin's last stop was in Dallas, where he served as the Cowboys' offensive line coach from 2020-22. Philbin coached several positions on the Packers' staff from 2003-06, and became the offensive coordinator for the franchise in 2007. In 2011, Philbin's offense helped lead Green Bay to a Super Bowl victory.
Philbin was hired as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2012, where he spent four seasons at the helm of the organization. During his tenure as the Dolphins’ head coach, Philbin coached current Ohio State offensive coordinator Brian Hartline, who played for the Dolphins from 2009-14.
He then went to Indianapolis, where he spent two years as the Colts' assistant head coach and offensive line coach, before returning to the Packers as offensive coordinator (and briefly interim head coach) in 2018.
Before Philbin's NFL tenure, he spent time as an assistant coach at WPI, Merchant Maine, Allegheny, Ohio, Northeastern and Harvard from 1986-98. Philbin also has previous experience coaching in the Big Ten, as he spent time under Kirk Ferentz as the Iowa offensive line coach from 1999-2002 before transitioning to the NFL.
