Ashley Griggs, the mother of Ohio State freshman wide receiver Carnell Tate, was killed in a drive-by shooting in Chicago this weekend.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Sunday that Griggs was the woman killed in a shooting in the Garfield Park neighborhood of Chicago early Sunday morning, according to multiple reports. Per ABC 7 Chicago, four other people were also injured in the shooting, though all of them are in fair condition. A suspect has not yet been identified, but one of the victims told police that the shooter was in a car when they opened fire.
Griggs was heavily involved in the recruiting process with her son, who grew up in Chicago although he played his final two years of high school football at IMG Academy in Florida.
As the news of his mother’s passing began to surface on Sunday, Tate received messages of support from throughout Buckeye Nation and the college football world.
The 7-on-7 team he played for in high school, South Florida Express, paid tribute to Griggs in a social media post.
About 2 years ago when you 2 became apart of the SFE family, we had no idea how close we would all become, today our heart skips a beat and we shed many tears hearing the tragic news. We love you both and will keep you in our hearts and will always be here for your family AG pic.twitter.com/w0oOkEJAkK
