Five-star safety Trey McNutt needs more time to consider his college decision.
McNutt, the son of former Buckeye defensive back Richard McNutt (1999-2002), was scheduled to choose between Ohio State, USC, Florida, Texas A&M and Oregon on Friday at 6 p.m. However, the Shaker Heights, Ohio, native announced Friday afternoon he will now commit on Aug. 3.
The announcement comes as welcome news to Ohio State. The Buckeyes were considered frontrunners to land McNutt in 2023 and most of 2024, but it became apparent the program had fallen behind in the race when he did not make an official visit to Ohio State this summer. Instead, McNutt traveled to USC, Florida, Texas A&M and Oregon in May and June.
The No. 1 safety and No. 19 overall prospect in 2025, according to the 247Sports composite, McNutt would be a stellar addition to Ohio State's top-ranked class. If he were to choose Ohio State on Aug. 3, he would become the Buckeyes' fourth safety commitment in 2025, along with Faheem Delane, DeShawn Stewart and Cody Haddad. He would also become the Buckeyes' fourth five-star commitment in the class, along with cornerbacks Devin Sanchez and Na'eem Offord and quarterback Tavien St. Clair.
