Ross Bjork’s latest comments suggest Ryan Day is likely to remain Ohio State’s coach in 2025.
While the Ohio State athletic director had already expressed support for Day in an interview with the Columbus Dispatch after the loss to Michigan, those comments seemingly left the door open for the possibility of a coaching change if the Buckeyes lost early in the College Football Playoff. His comments on 97.1 The Fan on Thursday morning, however, were more definitive in his plans for the future as Bjork said he is “absolutely” confident Ryan Day will remain Ohio State’s coach next season.
“Coach Day is awesome,” Bjork said. “He’s great to work with. He totally gets it. He loves being a Buckeye. And so we’re going to support him at the highest level throughout.”
Bjork has good reason to give Day a vote of confidence right now, as he wants Day to feel as though he has the full support of the administration behind him as he prepares Ohio State to play Tennessee in its first-round College Football Playoff game in nine days. Add in the fact that Ohio State is working on recruiting top players in the transfer portal, and it benefits Ohio State to project stability in the program for next season.
We still think the conversation could change if the Buckeyes suffer an early CFP exit with a loss to the Volunteers, but it’s clear now that any move to fire Day would be a change from Ohio State’s current line of thinking, with his $37 million buyout and the uncertainty of who would replace him also potentially serving as factors if Ohio State decides to keep him even though it’s facing the possibility of failing to achieve any of its major goals for three straight years.
We delve deeper into our thoughts on what Bjork said Thursday and what that means for Day’s future at Ohio State on a new episode of Press Coverage, which you can watch in the video at the top of the page.
