An Ohio State legend is returning to the Buckeye State as a FBS head coach.

Bowling Green announced Sunday that it has hired former Ohio State running back Eddie George as its new head coach.

Per ESPN’s Pete Thamel, George has signed a five-year contract with Bowling Green.

"I am truly excited to be the head coach at Bowling Green State University," George said in a statement released by the school. "Bowling Green is a wonderful community that has embraced the school and the athletics department. We are eager to immerse ourselves in the community and help build this program to the greatness it deserves. I am overwhelmed with excitement and joy for the possibilities this opportunity holds. I'm also thrilled to be back in the great state of Ohio, where I played my college football. I look forward to meeting the team, the coaches, everyone in the athletics department and everyone in the BGSU and Bowling Green community."

George will be formally introduced as Bowling Green’s new head coach in a press conference at 10:30 a.m. Monday.

George, the 1995 Heisman Trophy winner, has been the head coach at Tennessee State since 2021. He’s gone 24-22 in four years as the Tigers’ head coach, having his most successful season so far this past year, leading TSU to a 9-4 record, a Big South co-championship and a berth in the FCS playoffs.

Bowling Green had been looking for a new head coach to replace Scot Loeffler, who left Bowling Green last week to become the Philadelphia Eagles’ quarterbacks coach. According to Football Scoop, other candidates for the job included UMass offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian, Oklahoma State quarterbacks coach Kevin Johns and Minnesota co-defensive coordinator Nick Monroe.
