By the first intermission of this afternoon’s game between Ohio State and Vermont it looked as though the Buckeyes had missed their chance. The Bucks got off to a good start. They controlled much of the early action and outshot the Catamounts 7-3 over the opening seven minutes.

Then Julianna Iafallo was whistled for OSU’s first penalty and the tides turned quickly and completely in Vermont’s favor. Taylor Willard put the home team on the board. The Catamounts dominated the shot total over the remaining minutes of the frame, putting the puck on net ten times to the Bucks’ two.
But the Buckeyes battled back with a supreme second period effort. Dani Sadek got the scoring started for the Scarlet and Gray, cashing in a power play opportunity. Katie Matheny put the team ahead with a unassisted goal. Then Kendall Curtis showed why she’s Ohio State’s points leader, potting the game winning tally with three and change to play.
A quick third period strike from Vermont’s leading scorer, Dayna Colang, threatened a Catamount comeback. However Matheny nipped that in the bud just as quickly with her second goal of the day. (The Missouri native would go on to be named the player of the game.) Lauren Spring added a little icing to the victory cake with a late marker.

Buckeye goalie Alex LaMere had no small part in locking up the win. She stopped a total of 30 shots in the game. The sophomore netminder was especially key in the final frame where she turned aside all 13 of the Catamounts’ attempts.
With today’s win the Buckeyes have a chance to claim at least a share of the Windjammer Classic crown. Standing in the way of that is the tomorrow’s opponent, Boston University. The weekend favorite Terriers were upset earlier this afternoon by Cornell.
After twenty fairly evenly played minutes the teams were tied up 2-2. Then Cornell returned from the intermission and Boston apparently did not. The Big Red outshot BU 6-0 in the middle frame, notching both the gamewinner and an insurance goal. The Terriers came out firing in the third period, pouring 17 shots on the Cornell net but fell by a final score of 4-2.
Boston and Ohio State are scheduled for a 1pm start tomorrow. Cornell and Vermont skate at 4pm. Free live HD streams of both games are available courtesy of CatamounTV.
