The tilt between Ohio State and No. 2 Minnesota-Duluth on Friday night was the third meeting for the teams in 2016-17. UMD prevailed in the two previous contests. The Bulldogs were once again the victors on Friday, topping OSU by a final score of 6-1.

Duluth came out with guns blazing. The Bulldogs outshot the Buckeyes 14-3 in the first period. They posted the game’s opening goal just over eight minutes into the contest. Demi Crossman pounced on a rebound, beating OSU goalie Kassidy Sauve.

But the Buckeyes rallied. By the first intermission break Duluth no longer held an advantage. Freshman Rebecca Freiberger scored late in the opening frame to knot the score at 1-1. She was assisted on the play by fellow rookies Jincy Dunne and Katie Mikkelsen. The goal is the third point recorded by Freiburger in her last five outings.

A tense middle period passed with no edge gained by either squad. Not on the scoreboard, anyway. The teams traded power plays over the course of the stanza. Neither broke through with a go-ahead goal.

The second-ranked team in the nation asserted itself in the third period. The Bulldogs once again controlled the shot count, pouring 18 pucks on the Buckeye net. Katherine McGovern needed less than three minutes to put Duluth back in front.

The havoc began in earnest at the 7:55 mark. Jessica Healey, sister of OSU defenseman Josh Healey, netted a third Duluth goal. The Bulldogs struck three more times over the next 1:40. The fifth UMD score ended Sauve’s night. Kaylee Remington relieved her in net where McGovern welcomed the freshman with a sixth tally for the home team.

Ohio State has another crack at the ‘Dogs tomorrow evening. The teams wrap up their season series at 5pm ET. The game can be streamed online for a fee via NCHC.tv.
