Tanner Laczynski has joined an elite club. On Friday night he became just the tenth different Buckeye in program history to earn All-American honors. He is one of just three Big Ten players to make the cut.

The All-American nod caps a fantastic season for Laczynski. He led Ohio State in points (47) and ranked eleventh in the NCAA. The sophomore made an impact every night. He posted a point in nearly 70% of the Bucks’ games. He also stepped up when it mattered most, contributing points in six of Ohio State’s seven postseason games (3-5--8).

Laczynski’s output is hardly surprising. He is a career point-per-game player with 79 points through 75 games. Although, it was probably a surprise to the Big Ten which failed to recognize him as one of its 17 players to watch this season.

Go ahead. Try to think of 17 better players in the Big Ten. Try to think of five. (Spoiler alert: You can’t.) It’s a mistake the league will surely not make again. That is if, by some crazy chance, the Philadelphia Flyers do not snap Laczynksi up with a pro deal this offseason.

In addition to his All-American distinction, Laczynksi earned First Team All-Big Ten laurels this season. He was named an Ohio State Scholar-Athlete for the second straight year. He also garnered a second consecutive Academic All-Big Ten honor.

  • Laczynski is the fourth Buckeye All-American coached by Steve Rohlik.
  • Buckeye senior Christian Lampasso was a finalist for the Derek Hines Unsung Hero Award which went to Air Force's Dylan Abood.
  • Rohlik was the runner-up for the Spencer Penrose Coach of the Year Award which went to Notre Dame head coach Jeff Jackson.
