Ohio State checks in at No. 2 in the first College Football Playoff rankings of 2024.
Ohio State sophomore Myles Martin (184 pounds) was looking to become a two-time national champion after becoming the first Buckeye to win a title as a true freshman in 2016. However, Illinois' Emery Parker had a different plan.
In the second round of the 2017 NCAA Wrestling Championships, No. 6 Myles Martin fell to No. 11 Emery Parker (Illinois) 14-9 in one of the biggest upsets in the weight class.
Martin took down Parker earlier in the season, getting an 18-7 major decision in the Buckeyes' matchup with the Fighting Illini on Jan. 15, but Parker didn't let that loss affect him this time, and got the decision over Martin.
Martin, a reigning national champion at 174 pounds, figured to make a deep run into the tournament, especially after his impressive showing and second-place finish at Big Ten Championships.
Martin will now have to try to battle up to third place in the weight class via the consolation bracket.
