INTERNET RUMOR: Debunked.
From Karen Farkas of cleveland.com:
AKRON, Ohio - The University of Akron will retain its name, said President Scott Scarborough, responding Monday to what he called "a great deal of misinformation fueling rumors."
[...]
And an online petition, started on Wednesday on Change.org, that opposed what it said was Scarborough's plan to change the name of the university to Ohio Polytechnic Institute, had the support of more than 10,300 people by Monday afternoon.
On Monday, Scarborough sent a campus email and posted a message on its website and social media saying the university is not proposing a name change but is "seriously discussing how to reposition The University of Akron for greater distinction" which includes differentiating itself from other universities.
I understand 100% why UA staff/faculty/students and Akronians would be hesitant to change the name, but I must say: Ohio Polytechnic Institute sounds way more baller.
