Ohio St. had the privilege of having the 'A' teams for both FOX and ESPN call our games in consecutive weeks. Having watched a replay of the OSU vs Neb game with Gus and Joel just yesterday, I saw a very different approach when watching OSU vs Penn St. So here are my thoughts on watching the top tier broadcast from each network.
FOX:
- Energetic announcing: Despite the blowout nature of the game, I was hooked. These two seem to feed into each others strengths so well week in and week out.
- Referencing B1G: FOX does a great job of placing the focus of the telecast on the teams I am watching and in the B1G we will face down the road.
- Standard Camera Shots: There is room for improvement from the angles that are shown, however FOX is often willing to show an angle that may prove the Referee made a bad call.
ESPN
- Vanilla announcing: There is a staleness to hearing a game called by these two. I find myself getting distracted and grabbing some food, or scrolling through my phone without realizing it. I even missed some big plays because I just got lulled to sleep by these two.
- Referencing ESPN's preferred teams: The B1G starting late actually caused much more attention to be focused on OSU and the B1G than is typical of an ESPN broadcast. I do notice how much more ESPN loves to interject about the SEC or Clemson than FOX does.
- Innovative camera shots: ESPN easily has the upper hand in the different shots that they bring. They can show every square inch, yet when they feel a call is controversial they choose to just move on and pretend like they didn't get the controversial play on film.
