Was watching BTN this morning, and they brought up an interesting point. The eye test will be more important than usual right now. Now we all knew that, but what followed was interesting. Urban was asked if he felt comfortable ranking the top teams right now. His response (paraphrasing because I didn’t write it down as he said it):
“I don’t know that I’d be comfortable. But I would feel qualified. If I asked you to go and rank people doing surgery, you wouldn’t feel comfortable, what are you watching for? You're asking coaches to evaluate film and games, I could go into that room for a couple of hours, come out say which team is better. Say this team is better here, or they excel here. I could do that. I would have that experience to do that.”
Gerry DiNardo: ”So this year it is your opinion that the eye test is more important than most years?”
Urban: “Yeah and it worries me because who is doing the eye test.”
*Takes a look at who’s doing the eye test, who’s on the committee. Mostly AD’s, 2 southern coaches, 2 All American former players, a professor, and a former Army General.*
DiNardo: “So you talk about evaluating surgery, and that would be true of most of those names right?”
Urban: “Yes. And I know a lot of those names. They great people.”
*Urban lists several people he knows off the list*
Urban: “I guess the question is, what are you doing. So me they need to be able to analyze data, film, and teams. You have two qualified people. And you have 2 players, but film is like playing thousands of hours. They can’t do it as well. This list can look at stats etc. But they don’t have enough qualified people to do a good eye test.”
*End of interview*
AD’s are good, former players are great, but they really can’t evaluate these teams as well as a coach. Gen. Ray Odierno is undoubtedly an amazing person, and I’m sure Paola Boivin is a good professor, they don’t belong on this committee. Especially this year with the eye test being more important, this group isn’t qualified to properly rank these teams. And I think we saw that last night.
5-2 Georgia at #9 is ridiculous considering they’ve gotten smacked twice and barely won others. Regardless of your opinion on BYU, #14 is too low. A&M got waxed by a top 4 team at home, Indiana went to a top 4 team and competed. Both have one loss, guess who is higher. I could go on, but this committee isn’t good enough, and Urban pointed that out.
