No. 8/7 Buckeyes Top Badgers, 4-2

MADISON, Wis. – The No. 8/7 Ohio State men’s hockey team defeated Wisconsin, 4-2, Friday in game one of a Big Ten series in the Kohl Center. Ohio State led 1-0 after the first period and 3-2 after the second, adding a power play goal in the third for the 4-2 final. Carson Meyer led the Buckeyes with three points on a goal and two assists.

After the win, the Buckeyes improve to 14-5-2 on the year, with a 7-3-1-0 record in Big Ten play. The Badgers are 7-11-1, with a 2-8-1-1 conference ledger. Ohio State is 8-1-1 in its last 10 games, with a 4-1 record since returning from the December break. The teams will close the weekend series at 7 p.m. CT/8 p.m. ET Saturday. FS Wisconsin Plus will televise the game, with the broadcast carried by SportsTime Ohio and on the Fox Sports app.

In the First … Ohio State led 1-0 after the opening stanza on a power play goal from Carson Meyer. Tanner Laczynski found him at the far post for his seventh goal of the year. Wyatt Ege also assisted on the tally, which came at 10:13. Shots were 10-9 in favor of the Buckeyes in the period. Ohio State killed two penalties in the period – including 1:03 of a 5×3.

In the Second … Each team scored twice in the middle period. Josh Ess tallied through a screen for the Badgers to tie the game at one at 6:23. At 13:59, with the teams skating 4×4, Grant Gabriele tipped a shot from Gustaf Westlund five-hole right in front of the goalie to put the Buckeyes ahead 2-1. Meyer had the second helper on the goal. Wisconsin again deadlocked the score when Roman Ahcan tallied at 14:56. Westlund moved the Buckeyes ahead 3-2, putting in the rebound of a Meyer shot with the teams again 4×4. Ege also had a helper on the tally that came at 16:51, Westlund’s team-best 10th goal of the year. The Badgers had the shot advantage, 14-8, in the stanza. There were no power plays in the period.

In the Third … The final goal came on the power play at 12:19, with Buckeye senior Ronnie Hein putting in a rebound from the back wall. Tate Singleton and Carson Meyer assisted on the tally, Hein’s fifth of the year. Ohio State, which had three power plays in the period, including a five-minute major, outshot the Badgers, 12-5.
