And so we come to the albatross of the Buckeyes' schedule. This game won't be in doubt. This preview could be remarkably short. I will do my best not to add filler, because I would make March Madness your go to sports fix. Ohio State's not winning tomorrow.
Maryland is absolutely loaded. To a degree that's not really fair to anyone else in the Big Ten. Their attack unit features a Tewaraaton candidate in Jared Bernhardt, #1, perhaps the most underrated recruit in 2019, Daniel Maltz (#37), and another stud in Logan Wisnauskas, #12.
Any one of those guys would be an instant starter at Ohio State, and be the best player on the team. All three on one line is why Maryland is always in the Final Four under John Tillman. Add to that an incredible Offensive Coordinator hire in Bobby Benson, and the Terps are humming on offense in a way they never have during Tillman's tenure.
Midfield gets even more stacked. Bubba Fairman, #2, leads a deep rotation. Kyle Long, #23, and Anthony DeMaio, #16, round out the first midfield. This unit is probably top 2 in the country on any given day.
Since Ohio State will most likely be missing Ryan Terefenko, it will be a long, long day for the defensive midfield. Even if Terefenko comes back, the damage might only be slightly controlled. This is one of Division I's greatest strengths against one of Division I's greatest weaknesses. Prepare yourselves.
Defensively, Maryland is stout yet again, trotting out a starting lineup of Matt Rahill, #7, Brett Makar, #43, and Nick Grill, #54. The Terps have never been a team to leak goals, and this year's squad is no exception. Dodging will be rough for the entire Ohio State offense, and I would be very surprised to see the Buckeyes exceed 10 goals. Rutgers, with a very old offense, only managed 12 against Maryland. Ohio State isn't in the same stratosphere.
In goal, Logan McNaney, #30, backstops the fearsome Terrapin defense. McNaney is a serious keeper, who helped the defense keep Rutgers to just 30% shooting. Given the talent on hand at Rutgers, that's incredible. McNaney will be a rough matchup for the Buckeye offense, and will be hard to squeeze goals past with the pressure the defense will put on Ohio State.
At the faceoff dot, Maryland starts Justin Shockey, #3. Shockey is a 50% man, quite literally splitting his faceoffs down the middle (49-98). Here is about the only matchup Ohio State will be able to win, realistically. It's a small chance at a victory in some way, as the rest of the field tilts heavily to the Terps. Only a 90-10 split for the Buckeyes would have a chance at making a real difference.
Obviously, I don't feel good about Ohio State's chances tomorrow. If you could bet on this game, no line would be too high for me to place a wager on Maryland. Ohio State forgot how to play winning D years ago. The offense is slowly improving, but is still getting outshot significantly.
There are some small steps, but Maryland is following the football model of Alabama and Ohio State. Recruit an insane amount of talent, develop them, and win a crapton of games. This one won't be close, and March Madness is going to be a nice distraction from the beatdown coming.
Final Prediction: Maryland 20, OSU 12.
Hope I am wrong. But this team isn't built for the upset.
Go Bucks.
